SCHS offers a comprehensive anesthesia program with a curriculum designed by healthcare and educational professionals, delivered in a user-friendly hybrid environment.

• SCHS courses go beyond traditional online education by applying the best teaching/learning models. Based on knowledge of the ways people learn, the lesson design moves from simple to complex and stimulates critical thinking by incorporating interactions with the instructor and peers.
• Lesson concepts are linked with related concepts in other courses taken in parallel. Case studies and interactive simulations provide opportunities for active engagement with complex processes and relationships.
• Assessments determine how much of the lesson a student must engage and post-assessments measure comprehension of lesson objectives so that assessment becomes a teaching tool along with other lesson components.
• Student groups of 25 interact with a course instructor experienced in the subject area.

Each SCHS class of students comes together physically five different times during the 24-month program for on-site seminars with their classmates and with professors and professionals in anesthesia. Students receive funding from SCHS to make possible, including travel assistance and per Diem for housing and food costs. Besides nourishing a collegial environment for learning, these events teach required anesthesia lessons, and teach students to work in teams.

Clinical instruction in SCHS programs is designed to benefit the student, the clinical site, the family, and the community. By staying in the home community for clinical instruction, the benefits are:

• students are trained with the protocols unique to the anesthesia departments where they may eventually be working.

Electronically delivered courses are not for everyone. The discipline of meeting specific schedules with deadlines in a traditional academic setting is more favorable for some.
